AGAIN ABOUT PAK HARTO

Soeharto’s health condition has reportedly worsened over these past few days. This is saddening since he is hospitalized at Pertamina Central Hospital (RSPP) on January 4, 2008. A flock of Indonesian elites have come to see him in the hospital, and many others pray for his health. But, the only thing that remains in question is how the government resolves his legal case before Almighty God calls him back? In this case, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has offered an out of court settlement to the Seoharto family as a “win-win solution” to Pak Harto’s corruption case. However, the family rejects the offer. Like majority of Indonesians, I have no enough capacity to understand the complexity of legal process with its all consequences. Of course, in a democratic state, everybody is equal before the law. This notion is not debatable. In this case, Pak Harto, who has been living with his desperate sickness since 1999, has indeed respected his country’s supremacy of law. Although he has never shown up personally in the court room to be questioned by a panel judge and prosecutor as in the normal procedures, his respect to Indonesia’s legal system is undeniable. There must be a solution to this matter. Don’t let Pak Harto leaves us forever with this desperate condition owing to his unresolved legal case. We don’t know when his final day comes. The soul of every creature in the universe is in the hands of God, the Creator. But the final day of his and also ours must come someday. I join the prayer of many Indonesians for him. May Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala give His mercy to Pak Harto for the good deeds and forgive him for the mistakes as human he had made in his 86 years of life.

About Me

My photo
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Hi, I am a journalist of ANTARA, Indonesia's national news agency whose headquarters is in Jakarta. My fate has brought me back to Australia since March 2007 because my office assigns me to be the ANTARA correspondent there. My first visit to the neighboring country was in 2004 when I did my masters at the School of Journalism and Communication, the University of Queensland (UQ), Brisbane, under the Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) scheme. However, the phase of my life was started from a small town in North Sumatra Province, called Pangkalan Brandan. In that coastal town, I was born and grown up. Having completed my senior high school there in 1987, I moved to Medan to pursue my study at the University of North Sumatra (USU) and obtained my Sarjana (BA) degree in English literature in 1992. My Master of Journalism (MJ) was completed at UQ in July 2005. The final research project report for my MJ degree was entitled "Framing the Australian Embassy Bombing (Jakarta) in Indonesian and Australian Newspapers". Further details about me can be read in a writing posted in my blog entitled "My Life Journey".
